DOLLS FROM BRITTANY AND ELSEWHERE

KOKESHI are turned wooden figurines, they appeared as early as the 17th century in northern Japan. Toys, then souvenirs, these very stylized dolls are reminiscent of the matryoshkas of Russian crafts.

Here the "Breizh Kokeshi" wear Breton costume, but why not that of other provinces, or the panoply of a profession. The idea is to recognize the character despite a minimalist design, a headdress reduced to its simplest expression.

Like their cousins the PAPER DOLLS, the BREIZH KOKESHI were born in Brittany. They nevertheless claim foreign influence, they pay homage to the artisans of distant lands who obviously inspired their form, even their name.
